Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DOES IPSWITCH WHATSUP GOLD COLLECT WIRELESS DATA?

Health and monitoring data for your wireless networks are usually generated by wireless controllers.

Depending on whether your WiFi controller is located in-house or in the cloud, Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold using two primary methods for collection: SNMP or a cloud credential.

This data is collected periodically and then rationalised and correlated by the WhatsUp Gold engine, before being presented to you on-screen in the form of dashboard graphs and reports.

MY WIRELESS CONTROLLER ALREADY PROVIDES THIS INFORMATION, HOW DOES WHATSUP GOLD DIFFER?

Any network monitoring solution which offers monitoring for wireless networks are bound by the data which the wireless controller provides. This usually means that the data provided is the same as that which is displayed by the controllers own administration console.

Where WhatsUp Gold adds value, is its ability to interpret that data, correlate it with other gathered statistics from the network and present it in a consumable format.

Over the time which we have been working with Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold, we have consistently had feedback which praises the solution for its ability to present and report on the data it receives.

IF WIRELESS MONITORING IS A PLUGIN, HOW IS IT LICENSED?

Although we refer to wireless monitoring as a plugin or module, it is included with all WhatsUp Gold licenses as standard.

There are no additional costs for monitoring wireless networks.

HOW CAN WHATSUP GOLD WIRELESS MONITORING HELP TO IMPROVE WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY?

The wireless monitoring module for WhatsUp Gold is able to determine and report on a number of metrics, including: signal-strength, radio type, number of connected devices and bandwidth. In addition to this, WhatsUp Gold can automatically produce topology maps of your access points.

Together, this means that WhatsUp Gold can identify areas of poor coverage and highlight why.
